With the free developer plan, you can access key endpoints including:

Sign up as a Box developer

  1. Visit the .
  2. Enter your name, email address, and create a password.
  3. Accept the terms and select Get Started.
Confirm your email address to activate your developer account. Now you have access to the , where you can create applications, generate credentials, and start exploring APIs.

Default application and authorization

A default application using Client Credentials Grant (CCG) authentication is created for you automatically. On a free developer account, this app is also authorized automatically, so you don’t need separate admin approval before making API calls.

Upgrade your free developer plan

  1. Log into your Box account and select Back to My Account, if not already in Box Drive.
  2. From the top of the screen, select Upgrade Plan.
  3. Choose the plan that aligns with your requirements.
  4. Complete checkout and enter payment information to activate your upgraded features immediately.
Your existing developer applications, API credentials, and integrations stay the same during the upgrade process. You do not need to reconfigure or redeploy.

Select the right plan

Upgrading from the free developer plan unlocks higher storage and upload limits, multi-user enterprise administration, licensed API capacity, direct support, and access to additional Box products. Exact limits change over time, so use the page as the source of truth before you commit to production.

What paid plans add in general

Compared with the free developer plan, paid Business and Enterprise accounts typically include:
  • More capacity — Higher storage, per-file upload limits, file version history, and Box Sign volume.
  • Enterprise administration — Admin Console, managed users and groups, platform app authorization workflows, and optional for team-based testing.

Enterprise Advanced is required for several APIs documented in this developer site, including Box Doc Gen, Box AI Studio, and Box Archive. Box Automate and Box Hubs also depend on your plan and how your admin enables the product.
